How much does it cost to clear a blocked drain?

Check what the price covers before you book a plumber.

Work out what your blocked drain quote covers

In short

The cost to clear a blocked drain depends on the blockage, access to the pipe, equipment required and when the plumber attends. The official sources linked below do not provide a national job price. Ask for the attendance and inspection charges first, then a price for clearing the drain. Pipe repairs, excavation and restoring paving or landscaping may be separate work.

Step 1

Identify the work being priced

A price for attending the property may cover less than a price for getting the drain flowing. Ask which stage the advertised price or phone estimate covers.

Describe the affected sink, shower, toilet or outdoor drain, when the problem started and whether it has happened before. Symptoms alone do not establish the cause or the repair needed.

Costs to clarify

Costs to clarify
Part of the jobWhat to ask
AttendanceIs there a call-out fee, minimum charge or after-hours rate?
DiagnosisIs inspection included? What does a drain camera inspection cost?
ClearingWhat labour and equipment are included, and what happens if the drain cannot be cleared?
AccessWill locating or reaching the pipe require extra work?
Repair and restorationAre pipe repairs, digging and reinstating surfaces priced separately?

Step 2

Explain the urgency when you call

A slow drain without an overflow still needs assessment. Tell the plumber what is happening and ask how soon it needs attention. If a routine booking is appropriate, confirm the normal-hours rate.

If sewage is overflowing or backing up into the property, seek prompt professional help. Keep people and pets away from wastewater and stop using affected fixtures while you arrange advice. Report a suspected public sewer fault to your local water provider.

Step 3

Agree on the first visit before booking

Ask for written confirmation of what you will pay for the visit, including if you decline further work. Confirm whether the figure is a fixed quote or an estimate that may change after inspection.

For routine work, compare the same scope across available plumbers. Urgent overflows need direct professional help.

Step 4

Ask for evidence before approving pipe repairs

Clearing a blockage and repairing a pipe are different jobs. If the plumber recommends replacing or relining a pipe, ask them to show the findings, identify the affected section and explain the options. Relining means installing a new lining inside an existing pipe.

Request a separate written scope for further work. Where the property has been made safe and the work can wait, consider another assessment before committing to a substantial repair. Keep the report, footage and invoice for any later claim or follow-up.
